Firetrace International manufactures automatic fire detection and suppression systems for CNC machines and EDM units. According to the company, the systems can suppress fires in seconds, minimizing machine damage, repair costs and downtime.
These systems can extinguish machine fires sparked by oil-based metalworking fluids, coolants, and lubricants. They are compatible with most commercially available extinguishing agents, including Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid, Dupont FM-200, HFC-227ea, 3M CO2, Foam and Dry Chemical, as well as environmentally friendly “clean” agents. Clean agents are non-toxic, non-conductive and non-corrosive; they leave no residue on machines or workpieces and will not contaminate expensive lubricating oils or fluids.
The systems are self-contained and do not require any electrical power to operate. They feature detection tubing (a linear pneumatic heat sensor) that reacts to a fire or fast-rising heat event by bursting at the point nearest the greatest heat, triggering a discharge of the fire extinguishing agent. The detection tubing is flexible enough to route through tight, hard-to-reach areas yet rugged enough to withstand the heat, dirt and vibration typically found in harsh machining environments, the company says.
