Cermet Cutting Tools Suited for Machining Steel

The PV7025 PVD-coated, cermet grade of indexable cutting tool inserts from Kyocera Industrial Ceramics are designed for general machining of steel. They feature the company’s Megacoat PVD coating technology to increase wear and heat resistance while improving durability in high-speed machining applications.
Cermets are said to be less chemically reactive than carbide, which reduces the tendency for built-up edge and provides improved surface finishes. They also can run wet or dry, reducing coolant costs and enabling metal chips to be more easily recycled, the company says. The PV7025 insert maintains a flexural strength equivalent to P15 carbide making it capable of a variety of cutting depths and feed rates, including continuous roughing to finishing applications.
The company’s Megacoat cermet grades also include the PV7010 for high-speed finishing of steel and the PV7005 for cast iron machining.
