Drilling CFRP: What About Stacked Materials?

Veined PCD drills prove effective for composite/titanium stacks.

Among the most challenging machining operations involving aerospace composites is drilling a material “stack” in which a single tool has to drill a common hole through both carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and titanium. “Veined” PCD drills have proven effective for CFRP/titanium stacks, as reported in this paper from drill supplier Precorp.
