The G550T from Grob Systems is a high-precision HMC that can simultaneously machine parts in five axes as well as turn them. The distinguishing feature of this machine is its table that operates in the A and B axes, and can also turn parts at 800 rpm. This turning capability opens up new opportunities for manufacturers to machine wheels, certain housings and parts requiring both turning and milling in just one setup, the company says.
The machine’s horizontal spindle design provides access to the workpiece on all faces, including the inside of hollow parts (in addition to using the maximum tool length). The three linear and two rotary axes permit five-sided machining as well as five-axis simultaneous interpolation. The G550T’s compact design also provides ample front and side access for part loading as well as optimized chip flow.
The G550T machining strokes are 31.4" (800 mm) in the X axis, 37.4 (950 mm) in the Y axis and 40.1" (1,020 mm) in the Z axis. Its table has maximum rotation of 240 degrees in the A axis and 360 degrees in the B axis. The table is driven by a torque motor for turning operations and is capable of various clamping systems depending on part requirements. Linear glass scales are provided on all axes for positioning accuracy.
