Horizontal Lathe Hands Rough and Fine Turning

Chevalier’s FBL-520D heavy-duty horizontal turning lathe is capable of machining heavy parts and large pipe threading for applications in the energy and aerospace industries. The lathe offers accurate machining and can handle rough and fine-turning operations with a gearbox that provides enough horsepower for heavy-duty turning, the company says. Its live tooling capability can also save time by milling and turning a part in the same setup.
The turning center features a 45-degree slant-bed design constructed of single-piece Meehanite cast iron with a ribbed box structure that is heat-treated and stress-relieved. Four oversized box guideways measuring 5.1" wide and 3.1" thick provide stability and support.
The turning center’s 60-hp spindle motor with two-stage gearbox generates 9,000 Nm of torque for large-diameter workpieces or tough material applications. According to Chevalier, the 15" through-hole is suitable for pipe yard threading and meets API thread standards. The maximum swing diameter is 40" and cutting diameter is 37". The turning center’s programmable tailstock has a built-in MT-6 rotary quill said to provide better weight support than a live-center quill.
A dual-chuck design enables convenient loading and unloading of longer parts. The 12-station turret’s 7.8"-thick (200-mm) disc and hydraulic clamping help ensure cutting stability during rough-turning operations and enable deep-hole boring. A BMT85 power tool turret is available for milling a part with one setup. The turning center also is equipped with a FANUC 0i-TD control, FANUC digital servodrive and motor, and a link-type chip conveyor.
