The ability to take light cuts quickly makes the machining center more efficient with delicate tools that are very long relative to their diameter. This helps in at least
two cases:
- Milling deep cavities or deep slots like the one shown in the video.
- Milling fine details with very small tools.

The shop machining this mold uses HSM for fine details instead of EDM. Details like this one are machined using a 30,000-rpm spindle to run end mills as small as 0.010-inch diameter at 0.002 inch step-over and depth of cut. Photo courtesy Haas Automation.
