Our topic is “Buyer Beware: Are Specifications Really What They Seem?”

First, we’re going to talk about what a specification is and why it is needed. The next topic is where are specs now, and what that means to you as a buyer. We’ll also take a look at how specs are used as an evaluating tool for key performance measures for things like accuracy and repeatability, motion, non-cutting specifications, horsepower and torque, and a bunch of other specification quirks.

A lot of people put together a spreadsheet, where they recorded information based on manufacturer-supplied numbers, but they don’t realize that the numbers measured in a spreadsheet often are related. You need to understand what you’re looking at and how the numbers interact; otherwise, the spreadsheet could lead you to a decision that isn’t really based on real-world facts and figures.

We’ll then summarize and talk about when a specification is really not a specification.
