Using a smaller positioning error within each signal, Heidenhain’s ERM 2200 magnetic rotary encoder series with a 200-micrometer signal period, is designed to meet finer accuracy requirements on machine tools. The encoder uses magnetoresistive scanning technology that is said to be insensitive to contamination, making it suitable even for harsh machine tool environments.

The ERM 2200’s compact drums are available with inside diameters ranging from 70 to 380 mm and overall height of 20 mm when mounted to the machine. With distance-coded reference marks, the encoder only needs to move the axis a maximum of 20 degrees during a homing routine to find a referenced position. It is available with a 1-Vpp interface and is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 14,500 rpm.
