The 2013 version of PartMaker’s CAM software for CNC mills, turn-mills, bar-fed mills and Swiss-type lathes offers the Advanced Surface Machining module (ASM), a new milling functionality that replaces the software’s Surface Machining Wizard (SMW) for three-, four- and five-axis machining. According to the company, the benefits of the new functionality include faster tool path calculation, greater control and improved surface finish, among others.

The surface machining strategies in ASM are the same as those found in parent company Delcam’s PowerMill software and extend the software’s five-axis, simultaneous milling capabilities to CNC milling centers. According to the company, these strategies provide full tool control to enable use with methods ranging from traditional three-axis machining to full simultaneous five-axis operations.

ASM also includes Delcam’s new Vortex high speed machining strategy. Designed for 2.5 and three-axis roughing, 3+2 area clearance and rest machining, Vortex produces tool paths with a constant engagement angle. This provides stable cutting conditions that are normally possible only during straight-line moves in order to improve tool life, protect the machine and reduce cycle times, the company says.
