Machine tool builder Okuma America (Charlotte, North Carolina) and distributor Hartwig (St. Louis, Missouri) will provide machine tool equipment to Davis Applied Technology College (DATC) for use in its Machine Tool Technology Program. The machine tool lab—soon to be known as the Okuma Institute for Technology at Davis Applied Technology College—will also serve as a showroom for Hartwig in the Rocky Mountain region, where local manufacturers can see first-hand Okuma’s machines and THINC control technology.
Machine tools slated for installation at DATC, located just north of Salt Lake City, Utah, include CNC lathes, VMCs, multi-tasking machines and an HMC with a Fastems flexible manufacturing system. The equipment will be used to provide students with hands-on training for development of CNC machinists, programmers and quality control and inspection specialists.
Although some machines have been installed and training has begun, the Okuma Institute of Technology at Davis Applied Technology College will formally open on January 12. Grand opening activities scheduled for January 12-14 will include seminars covering automation, THINC, lean manufacturing and other topics.
