Icon Technologies, a division of Hydromat, offers the Tripod 700S Powerflex, a modular, six-axis parallel kinematics machine (PKM) for advanced applications. PKM technology means that the motions in X, Y and Z are performed by three parallel axes that are said to provide stiffness and accuracy while offering machining flexibility. It combines the versatility and machining envelope of a robot with the accuracy and stiffness of traditional machine tools. The company says its Tripod Powerflex does not notice any differences between a perpendicular hole or surface compared to a compound angle, and is therefore well-suited for a variety of complex machining operations.
The machine’s design is said to answer the increasing needs for automation, dexterity and precision, while reducing absolute positioning and orientation errors. This results in high structural stiffness and the capability of performing extremely high-speed motions because of the low inertia of its moving components.
The work envelope of the model 700S is 800 x 800 x 400 mm with smaller and larger cutter areas available with the 300S, 500S and 900S models. Each machine can be configured as required for an application with the correct combination of machine size, spindle and tool changer. The Tripod Powerflex models feature 40 or 80 pocket tool changers.
