Gibbs and Associates introduced two new GibbsCAM options specialized to simplify five-axis programming of turbo machinery parts (rotary parts with blades). Fully integrated with GibbsCAM five-axis and machine simulation, the Five-Axis-MultiBlade and Five-Axis-Advanced MultiBlade options offer two levels of functionality to program five-axis machining centers and multitasking machines with five-axis capabilities.
Five-Axis-MultiBlade is an add-on for the GibbsCAM five-axis option specialized for multi-bladed rotary parts. Features are selected by elements common to turbo machinery parts, such as blade and hub, and can be done without having to prepare the model for processing. Available machining operations include five-axis simultaneous roughing, hub finishing, and blade and splitter finishing. Additional toolpath options include extension and control at the leading and trailing edges, as well as intelligent control of rotating tool paths around the entire part. Automatic gouge checking is available on all tool paths.
Five-Axis-Advanced MultiBlade is an add-on to the MultiBlade option for machining more-complex parts. Its more-advanced toolpath strategies and control include more sorting methods (toolpath sequencing and reordering) to increase toolpath efficiency and decrease run times, the company says. The add-on is said to offer more leading and trailing edge control and more tilt control. It is suitable for blade fillet machining, stock definition for rest machining, tool axis smoothing, splitter smoothing, plus support for multiple splitters (sub-splitters).
Both options offer intuitive interfaces for ease of use and menus that incorporate common turbo machinery terminology. The user selects the type of part to be machined, identifies a few part features (typically blade, splitter and hub), establishes tool parameters, and clicks on the “do it” button. The software creates efficient, collision- and gouge-free toolpath. Users can also store proven processes for future use.
