Kennametal’s next-generation spindle connection, the KM4X, is designed for machining tough materials, such as titanium. According to the company, balancing high metal-removal rates and low cutting speeds can be a challenge for maximized productivity. Over the years, machine tool builders have improved stiffness and damping on spindles and machine structures to minimize vibration, the company says. The KM4X spindle connection is said to provide three times the bending moment resistant capacity as common tool systems.

The system’s increased clamping force and controlled interference levels offer a strong connection, high stiffness and restrained bending moment to improve performance in titanium machining, the company says. The spindle connection can be retrofitted to an existing machine tool.
