Teknor Apex Co., Pawtucket, R.I., significantly broadened its rigid PVC compounding business through its recent acquisition of custom compounder Viking Polymers, Jamestown, N.C. Says Louis Cappucchi, v.p. and head of Teknor Apex Vinyl Div., which now includes Viking Polymers, “While most of the business of the Vinyl Division has historically centered on flexible compounds, rigid PVC plays an increasingly important role in our continued growth. The acquisition of Viking Polymers adds substantially to our rigid PVC capabilities and represents a natural extension of our product portfolio into weatherable capstocks, CPVC compounds, and other specialties for the fast-growing building and construction market.”
Viking’s weatherable compounds reportedly make possible dark and wood-toned colors that withstand prolonged outdoor exposure. Chief applications for CPVC compounds include hot and cold potable water systems and industrial piping. The specialty compounds of the acquired business, which will continue to operate in Jamestown, will now be offered beyond North America, as Teknor produces rigid vinyl compounds in Singapore and Suzhou, China, according to Viking founder and president John Ammondson, who will now serve as a consultant to Teknor Apex.
