Turn-Mill Machine Minimizes Thermal Deformation

Doosan’s Puma SMX 3100 S turn-mill multitasking machine combines the capabilities of a horizontal turning center and a vertical machining center. The machine features a rigid 90-degree vertical axis and forward-positioned automatic toolchanger for improved milling and enhanced operator ergonomics. Its multitasking functions are said to reduce total processing time and the number of machining operations.

Two models are available, the Puma SMX2600 with a 10" chuck and 3.1" bar capacity, and the Puma SMX3100 featuring a larger 12" chuck and 4" bar capacity. Both models have the capacity to machine parts ranging to 60" in length and 26" in diameter. The X1-, Y- and Z1-axis travels measure 24.8" × 62.4" × 11.8". Rapid traverse rates are 50 m/min. in the X1 and Z1 axes, and 36 m/min. in the Y axis.

The multitasking machine’s rigid construction is said to minimize thermal deformation via oil cooler and an accuracy-control feature based on multiple thermal compensation functions. The control function helps to maintain precision during long-term machining processes by minimizing the thermal deformation of the spindle and the feed axis, and by maximizing the precision through the 0.0001-degree B and C axes. Oil cooler minimizes thermal deformation of the spindle and feed axis and high-rigidity and high precision are achieved through the use of roller-type linear motion guides on all carriages.

The turn-mill machine features a front-located tool magazine accommodating as many as 80 tools; side-to-side movable, 85-degree swiveling FANUC 31i control panel with adjustable height; and an ATC operation panel. It can be equipped with an optional SMX subspindle.
