Carpenter Technology Corp. has released an Android version of its MetalMass software application for mobile digital devices. The app is available for downloading at no charge from both the iTunes and Google online stores. Originally developed for the iPhone and iPad, the app features a simple interface that enables users to calculate the estimated weight and cost of metal bars based upon alloy family, cross sectional size, length and density.

Materials covered by the app include stainless steels, titanium alloys, nickel-based alloys and others. Users can select Imperial or metric settings. Carpenter is recommending the app for machine shops, design engineers and OEMs, but notes that it provides estimates only and does not guarantee actual shipped weight or total cost.
