Metrology System For On-Demand Inspection, Reverse Engineering - Romer Inc.

The ScanShark V5 laser scanning probe is the latest addition to Romer's ScanShark portable inspection and reverse-engineering system. In addition to the probe, the system includes a seven-axis Infinite portable CMM, PolyWorks software and a laptop or desktop computer. The mobile metrology system is designed to offer articulated-arm measurement and laser scanning for on-demand part inspection and/or reverse engineering on the shop floor.

The laser probe has a scanning speed of 458,000 points per second with a point-to-point resolution of 12 microns and a 140-mm-wide laser stripe. A custom, integrated rangefinder is designed to simplify the scanning process. The probe can scan reflective surfaces and varying colors without applying surface preparation, the company says.

According to the company, mating the probe to the Infinite portable CMM's articulating arm enables high-density surface inspection. Available in 6-, 8-, 9-, 10- and 12-foot measuring envelopes, the arm features the company's “inifinite rotation” and low-profile Zero-G counterbalance designed to reduce user fatigue. Other features include lightweight, carbon-fiber arm tubes and an optional rolling-cart base.
