Recently Modern Machine Shop Magazine toured KLH Industries, Inc. in Germantown Wisconsin. KLH Industries, Inc. is a contract manufacturing facility of approximately 25,000 square feet. They manufacture parts and components for Aerospace, Defense, Medical and Food Processing industries. Matt,

I just read the MMS article. I found the article very informative with several key similarities to our shop environment. We just went through ISO 9000 implementation and I am looking at Lean concepts to push continual improvement. Lean is not just for captive shops. You really drove that point home.

My only gripe with the article is the lack of statistical data or other quanifiable information proving the effectiveness (and ROI) of Lean. Although partially state financed, the classes seem like a large expense. The article could have used productivity figures or financials to show the value of Lean training.

The classes were a significant investment. Being a confidential shop though, we did not feel the need to disclose financials and/or ROI numbers. Lean training can be provided in various forms and for us, like you mentioned, was partially state funded. I can tell you that we have improved many processes, the numbers are constantly being evaluated and we have been seeing continuous improvement throughout the shop as far as productivity, reducing lead times and reducing scrap-rework.
