Responding to the current economic climate, UK-based machine tool manufacturer 600 Group has recently implemented a series of administrative changes to achieve operational efficiency throughout the organization. The Group, which includes brands such as Colchester-Harrison, Pratt Burnerd, Gamet Bearings and Electrox, has moved its headquarters, reorganized its management structure and introduced a range of new technologies. The Group’s headquarters has been moved to the Heckmondwike facility of its flagship company, 600 Lathes, which manufactures the Colchester-Harrison range of machine tools.
DP Technology Renews Third-Party Agreements - 11/14/2008
DP Technology has renewed agreements that expand the functionality of its CAM software via integration with third-party applications. Through an agreement with Spatial Corp. a provider of 3D software components for technical applications, the company will extend the use of the InterOp Suite in its Esprit CAM application.
Italian Builders Focus On High-Tech Solutions - 11/7/2008
More than 96,000 visitors attended the 26th edition of Italy’s biennial machine tool show, Bi-Mu, from October 3 through 7 at the Fiera Milano exhibition center in Milan. While attendance remained roughly the same as the previous edition, this figure is “not only positive, but also rewarding, considering the particularly turbulent context,” says Giancarlo Losma, president of Ucimu, the Italian machine tools, robots and automation manufacturer’s association. Many exhibitors say the financial crisis and dollar-Euro exchange rate have had an adverse impact on business in the U.
DMG Opens L.A. Tech Center - 11/7/2008
Machine tool builder DMG American has opened a new Technology Center in Cypress, California, in the greater Los Angeles area. According to the company, the new facility is a demonstration of its commitment to better serve the West Coast aerospace, medical and general machining market at all levels and with more equipment diversity. Hundreds of visitors from local job shops and OEMs attended the grand opening ceremony in late October.
Metris Inaugurates New Facility - 11/7/2008
Metris has inaugurated a new manufacturing facility in Manasssas, Virginia, centralizing production of all its large-volume metrology products. The new facility merges two former offices that originally served as headquarters to ArcSecond and MetricVision, respectively, before Metris acquired both firms in recent years. The 30,000-square-foot facility houses 60 employees and is located in Prince William Technology Park on Innovation Drive.
Fabtech Turnout Better Than Expected - 10/31/2008
Despite grim financial news, an unprecedented number of attendees filled the halls on the opening day of the 2008 Fabtech International & AWS Welding Show, introducing Metalform. More than 12,000 manufacturing and welding professionals attended opening day of the show’s debut in Las Vegas, and attendance for the entire three-day event amounted to more than 21,000. This year marks the first time Fabtech has taken place west of the Mississippi, and it attracted a new audience—56 percent were first-time attendees.
Contest Winners Display Creativity, Skill - 10/31/2008
Mori Seiki USA has announced the winners of the 2008 Innovation of the Americas machining competition, which is designed to recognize talented machinists in the metalworking industry. Four professionals from reputable industry organizations and universities, led by Professor Kazuo Yamazaki of the University of California, Davis, judged more than 130 entries in four categories. The entries represented a wide range of materials, sizes and shapes, and were of such high quality that selecting winners was challenging for the judges.
Mazak Establishes New Department - 10/31/2008
 Mazak Corporation has established Mazak Automation Systems, a new department at its North American headquarters in Florence, Kentucky. The company says the department will offer a comprehensive range of automation solutions and enable customers to benefit from the company's experience in manufacturing and machining technologies. Systems include process and software engineering, project management, application support, customer support and customer training.
Economist Retains Optimism Amid Economic Crisis - 10/24/2008
While it may seem difficult to find even a single sliver of good news amid the global economic crisis, one economist actually has identified three silver linings. “For starters, the threat of inflation that dominated discussions earlier this year has faded from consideration by most,” says Dr. Chris Kuehl, economic analyst for the Fabricators & Manufacturer’s Association.
