http:// At IMTS 2008, the ETC - Emerging Technology Center will showcase MTConnect, a new open-communication protocol standard for interoperability between machines, independent systems, devices and higher-level applications. The standard is said to allow devices, equipment and systems to output data in an understandable format that can be read by any other device. The standard will be open and royalty-free to ensure the widest possible acceptance and utility. At the show, MTConnect will be explored in a video presentation for attendees and exhibitors not already familiar with the standard. In addition, a live demonstration of the standard will connect approximately 20 exhibitors via the internet and an illustrative computer dashboard. IMTS also will host contestants in an international student competition that challenges universities to demonstrate new and innovative concepts using MTConnect. The ETC will also provide a forum for universities and research laboratories to exhibit their latest technologies and research and development efforts in science-based manufacturing and innovative process developments. Among these efforts are Penn State's Machine Dynamics Research Lab, which will spotlight a system that senses the force generated during precision grinding; and the University of New Hampshire's Smart toolholder, which features a sensor system that provides tool-tip data for process condition monitoring during the cut.
