MC Machinery Systems (Wood Dale, Ill.), wholly owned by Mitsubishi, has partnered with Matsuura Machinery (Fukui City, Japan) to introduce the Lumex Avance-25 metal laser sintering hybrid milling machine to the North American market. The machine is capable of both metal laser sintering (3D selective laser sintering) as well as high-speed milling processes, enabling the production of complicated parts using 3D data. Metal powders are melted and sintered via laser, and then surfaces can be precisely milled at high speeds. One advantage of the system is that it enables dies and molds to be fabricated in one piece with high accuracy, the companies say. They anticipate interest in the additive machine from mold and die, aerospace, and medical industries, among others.
