If You Want To Improve Something, Measure It
There is something seemingly magical about measuring any performance-related output. Just the act of measuring and tracking the variable seems to exert pressure that causes that variable to improve.
A medical-related job shop that has embraced lean manufacturing takes advantage of exactly this phenomenon. As a means of steadily improving its process, it tracks various performance numbers throughout the shop and discusses them around a shopfloor whiteboard at the end of every workday.

Mentors Of Measurement
In Modern Machine Shop’s Inspection & Measuring Zone, measurement technology company Renishaw has three different teams answering questions related to various aspects of measurement and metalworking. Topic categories include CMM inspection, machine tool performance and on-machine probing. Whatever machining accuracy or coordinate metrology challenge you may face, you are likely to receive helpful advice from one of these teams.

Consider Your Coolant
Metalworking fluid is one of the more underappreciated components of any machining process. When the fluid isn’t right, a lot of different things can go wrong. Use this metalworking fluid troubleshooting guide to quickly spot potential solutions to problems that might result in some way from the coolant not getting proper attention.

Shop Solution
Home Video: 5S
Have you thought about producing your own video as a training resource for prospective employees? This shop did, using relatively inexpensive digital video equipment and software editing tools. The result is not only an example of what kind of video can be produced relatively easily by even a small shop, but also a useful introduction to the “5S” technique. Watch the video here.

Our Next Issue
Lean On Me
Modern Machine Shop’s August issue will focus on Lean Manufacturing in the Job Shop—profiling three different shops that are succeeding at lean even though they don’t have a standard product. That issue will coincide with the re-launch of our Lean Manufacturing Zone, which has been newly expanded to include (among other things) video profiles of other machining facilities that are succeeding with lean.
