Introducing the Advanced Manufacturing Center
Modern Machine Shop and its publisher, Gardner Publications, will have what we think is the coolest booth experience we’ve ever presented at IMTS. We’ve named our 60' x 90' booth at the entrance to the new West Building the Advanced Manufacturing Center, presented by Boeing, the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), Modern Machine Shop and IMTS.
The booth will include a variety of interesting elements. These include an actual bulkhead section of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, representatives of Boeing’s Phantom Works R&D unit and ten of the AMRC’s technology/research partners. There will also be a number of prizes and giveaways offered at the booth.

Beating the "Credit Crunch"
It’s no secret that companies needing to borrow money to buy or lease equipment are facing a “credit crunch.” Ed Testa, vice president of sales for a leading equipment financing company, suggests basic ways to make your business more attractive to a lender in his article “Don’t Let the Credit Crunch Stop Your Company’s Growth."
Your Thoughts
Difficult to Obtain Credit?
We’ve gotten feedback that it is getting tougher to secure bank financing for capital equipment purchases. Have you experienced this problem? If so, briefly tell us what happened.
Share your opinions and experiences. If we publish your response, you’ll receive your choice of one free book from the metalworking section of the Hanser Gardner bookstore.

Adapting to High Material Costs
In our July edition, we asked you to describe what you’ve changed in your shop as a result of the increased prices of power and materials. Slater Tools’ Peter Bagwell offered the following:
“I’ve revisited two purchasing methods to combat steel prices recently. First, I’ve asked the steel suppliers to send me a list of their stock sizes. Although this seems like something everyone would do, not all stock the same sizes and lately they’ve had a few bars of odd size stock closer to the size I need. This saves on machining, price and weight. Second, I’ve sold unused material back to suppliers and scrap dealers. Prices are high, and it’s a good time to move and negotiate those items.”

The History of IMTS
IMTS 2008 opens September 8th and runs through the 13th. The International Manufacturing Technology Show began as the National Machine Tool Builders’ Exposition in 1927. Start here to speed through a history of the show.

Our Next Issue
Composites, CNC Turning, Applying MRP
Machining composites is so different from machining metals; it involves a fundamentally different mechanism of material removal. Modern Machine Shop’s September issue contains a special report highlighting various techniques shop use to machine those materials.
Another story highlights a shop that excels in turning Inconel, while a third details a shop’s strategy for automating its turning operations.
A fourth feature describes the reasons why a shop developed its own distributed manufacturing resource planning system (MRP) and how it benefits from immediate access to vital shop information.
