Leadership Skills Also Characterize A Champion
Earlier this month, I had a chance to visit Calgary, Alberta to see some of the international WorldSkills Competition (WSC). This biennial event, which moves to a different city and country each time, is an opportunity for students in occupational trades to compete with their international peers. This year, students from 51 countries participated in events ranging from cooking, hairdressing and plumbing to welding, mechatronics, CNC turning and CNC milling. The team from the United States entered students in both of these last two categories. The results of their efforts revealed more than I expected.

Machining Efficiency Starts With Design
DFMA software is a combination of two tightly integrated, complementary tools: Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Manufacture (DFM). A job shop in Wisconsin uses this combination software to quote costs, analyze designs, implement process controls and communicate with customers and the supply chain. By identifying the main cost drives and responding to them before a design goes into production, the shop makes its machining operations much more efficient and profitable.
