What I Saw At JIMTOF

JIMTOF, the big machine tool show that took place last November in Tokyo, Japan, used to be a good place to see some pretty futuristic ideas about machine tool design. That’s less true today. It’s more about “what’s happening now,” and that is a good thing, too. Most of what I saw there confirmed trends apparent at prior shows such as IMTS in Chicago back in September. Here’s a rundown:

Getting Started With Minimum Quantity Lubrication
Minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) does not have to involve a special machine tool or special tooling. Technology is available for applying MQL effectively on an existing machining center. A new instructional video makes the case for MQL and also describes how to apply it effectively.

Our Next Issue MMS January
Medical Machining, Machining Big Parts, Grinding Turbine Blades
January’s cover story highlights a shop that succeeds at giving medical instrument and implant manufacturers want they want. That means top-notch machining plus the extras such as precision cleaning, marking, packaging and expert handling of the regulatory paperwork.

Another feature article tells how two shops revaluated their existing technology and saw an opportunity to serve new customers even as existing customers began to fade. They’re getting new business with their big machines.

We’ll also review some new thinking on the best way to process the lighter, tougher materials used for today’s aerospace components.
