Automatic fire detection and suppression systems are designed for extinguishing machine fires sparked by oil-based metalworking fluids, coolants and lubricants. The systems are compatible with most commercially available extinguishing agents, including environmentally friendly “clean” agents that are non-toxic, non-conductive and non-corrosive. The clean agents leave no residue on machines or workpieces and will not contaminate expensive lubricating oils or fluids, the company says.
The systems are self-contained and do not require any electrical power to operate. The heart of the system is the proprietary detection tubing (a linear pneumatic heat sensor), that reacts to a fire or fast-rising heat event by bursting at the point nearest the greatest heat, thus triggering a discharge of the fire extinguishing agent. According to the company, the detection tubing is flexible enough to route through tight, hard-to-reach areas yet rugged enough to withstand the heat, dirt and vibration found in harsh machining environments.
