PCD-tipped boring bars last longer for abrasive, nonferrous metals such as silicon aluminum, ceramics and composites. CBN-tipped boring bars last longer for abrasive cast iron and super alloys. They excel on ferrous metals that are 45 HRc or harder. Inaddition to longer tool life, both PCD and CBN provide higher machining feeds and speeds, better quality finishes and tighter tolerances, the company says.

With PCD tooling, yes it can. The diamond cutting edges demand a large number flutes to realize their full effectiveness. Traditional methods for making cutter bodies limit the number of flutes, but 3D printing is delivering tools with higher flute density and other enhancements as well.
