The Model DLM 505 flat-honing machine features a dual-wheel design that can produce a J-Polish on the top face while simultaneously removing stock on the bottom. According to the company, this process achieves the same or greater precision with fixed abrasives compared with conventional loose-abrasive lapping or grinding. It also is capable of holding submicron tolerances and providing mirror finishes. In most applications, there is no need for pre-machining or secondary grinding, as metal removal rates are said to be the same or faster than polishing. Workpieces are held in carriers, enabling batch loading/unloading, which increases machine uptime. The open, bridge-style construction can be adapted for automation by adding conveyors or other workpiece handling systems from both sides of the machine.
