The MasterWind Lean Manufacturing Center is a portal gantry milling machine said to provide a lean machining process for large components. The system is equipped to machine hubs, gear boxes, upper plates, lower plates, main bearing housings and nacelles in one set up. For example, this machine can finish the hub of a typical 2.5 MW turbine generator weighing 20,000 lbs in approximately 8 hours. It can complete the hub of a 5 MW turbine generator weighing 80,000 lbs in approximately 20 hours. The machine features a spindle motor delivering 160 hp (120 kW) with 2,520 foot-pounds (3,500 Nm) and 3,300 rpm. Prior to machining, a machine-mounted probe checks the casting automatically to establish the optimum location of the origin of the part coordinates and the correct orientation. This will help ensure balanced stock removal, while assuring at the same time that the casting is adequate. For those parts that require turning, the machine is equipped with a turning table for combined mill-turning capabilities.
