Handheld Metal Alloy Analyzers Provide Traceability

Designed to eliminate guesswork in verifying metal alloys for manufacturing quality assurance, the Niton XL2 and XL3 x-ray fluorescence (XRF) handheld analyzers provide analysis within seconds anywhere, any time, the company says. The instruments provide storage of all test results in a data format. Communication options include Bluetooth wireless, USB and RS-232 serial communication ports.
The analyzers come standard with Niton Data Transfer (NDT) software, a suite of data management utilities that enables users to set operator permissions, print certificates of analysis to document results or operate the unit remotely from a PC. The NDT file format preserves and protects data from each sample analysis, the company says.
Suited for small to mid-sized operations, the ergonomically designed XL2 features a daylight-readable display with large icons. Other features include customizable menus, multiple language options and a standard range of more than 25 elements.
The XL3 with geometrically optimized large area drift detector (GOLDD) technology features improved sensitivity and reduced measurement time, the company says. The unit measures light element content (magnesium, aluminum, silicon, phosphorus and sulfur) without the need for helium or vacuum purging. This provides the capability to analyze additional grades, including titanium alloys, aluminum and silicon bronzes, and aluminum alloys, for silicon and magnesium content. The unit can also identify SS303, SS416 and other free-machining stainless steels based on sulfur content. An integrated CCD camera records an image of actual test results along with analysis data. An optional small spot feature enables users to isolate and test small sample areas, such as welds and seams.
