Mag’s new high-torque T-Rex spindle, available on the company’s four-axis HMC 1250/1600 machines, can deliver up to 2600 Nm (1,918 foot-pounds) of torque to achieve high metal removal rates in hard materials, such as titanium, Inconel, and Carpenter 465. Developed for the large-scale machining needs of aerospace, energy and heavy equipment manufacturers, the spindle is equipped with 130-mm (5.1") ID bearings to handle the 42.3 kN (9,500 pounds) of cutting thrust capability of the HMC 1250/1600 series. The T-Rex is currently available on machines configured with 80 kW (107.3 hp) driving power and two speed ranges (up to 5,000 rpm).

 
The company says a recent demonstration using Carpenter 465 hardened to 50 to 52 HRc highlights the T-Rex spindle’s capabilities. Using the T-Rex and a 75-mm (3") diameter inserted end mill with five flutes and 13 inserts per flute, a machine achieved 100 mm (4") axial depth of cut, 24 mm (0.95") radial depth of cut and 0.5 mm/rev (0.020 ipr) feed rate. In addition, the cuts produced an excellent surface finish with no sign of chatter and virtually no vibration, using only one-third of the available spindle power, the company says.
