The Felsomat Power Speed Honing (FPSH) 180 machine integrates with the company’s other Flexline concept machines, which are intended to merge the entire gear manufacturing process into a single, uninterrupted machine chain. The honing machine process is intended to follow hobbing conducted on the company’s FHC 180 hobbing machine as well as the company’s ALD SyncroTherm inline heat treatment process. As a result of these preceding operations, less stock needs to be removed from the gear flanks, resulting in shorter gear-honing cycle times, the company says. The honing machine can hone gears as large as 160 mm in diameter (module 0.5 to 4.0 mm). Depending on the heat treatment deviation, the machine can remove 40 to 80 microns of stock on each flank without grinding burn because of the low cutting speed.
