Unisig Deep Hole Drilling Systems offers the S-series machine line for the skiving and roller burnishing process. The machines are optimized for ease of setup, fast operation and clean chip removal during the skiving and roller burnishing process, the company says.

Skiving and roller burnishing is said to be used primarily to achieve extreme roundness and surface-finish requirements in hydraulic-cylinder applications. This one-pass process uses two methods in conjunction with each other. A group of skiving knives remove material from the inside surface of an existing bore, and rollers pass on the same tool to cold-work the metal surface and create a mirror-finish. This process suited for hydraulics because it can effectively control the process, achieve desired tolerances and maintain a clean machining process, the company says.

The S-series machines can achieve surface finishes as smooth as Ra 0.05 µm. Both the straightness and surface finish are vital to hydraulic-cylinder operation, as the piston seal runs along this surface and contains high-pressure hydraulic fluid.

Machines can also be configured with additional counter-boring capabilities ranging to 305 mm in diameter.
