WEB EXCLUSIVE: Stepping up development of new tailored materials to meet the increasing demand for PC resins in LED lighting systems, Bayer MaterialScience, Pittsburgh, has produced new grades with high thermal conductivity for cooling elements used for thermal management of LEDs. Makrolon TC 8030 is one example of these new grades, which are being developed as an alternative to aluminum. According to Klaus Reinartz, head of the company’s global LED program, “These materials allow the cooling ribs to be more delicate and lighter. Unlike their aluminum counterparts, injection molded cooling elements require no post-treatment, enabling cost-effective production with low energy consumption.”
This new grade has a UL 94V-0 rating at 2.5 mm thickness. It is currently available in black, but additional colors can be achieved through film insert molding or painting.
