Available from Mazak, the Variaxis i-700 five-axis machine is designed for complete, single-setup machining of long workpieces and parts requiring complex, curved surfaces. According to the company, the machine is suitable for applications ranging from heavy-duty work to high speed cutting of aluminum and other nonferrous materials.
 
With Y-axis travel of 43.3(1,100 mm) and X-axis travel of 24.8"  (630 mm), the machine can accommodate workpieces as large as 33.46" (850 mm) in diameter and 19.68" (500 mm) high. A roller gear, cam-driven rotary/tilt table, with 360 degrees of C-axis rotation and +30 to -120 degrees of A-axis tilt, is supported at both ends for stability and accuracy.
 
The machine’s standard 12,000-rpm, 30-hp, 40-taper spindle features a compact nose design to provide a 23.62" (600-mm) Z-axis stroke and improve stability by enabling the use of shorter tools. A 30-tool ATC adds additional flexibility and contributes to continuous machining operations. Available options include an 18,000-rpm spindle and a two-pallet changer.
 
The X, Y and Z axes incorporate the company’s MX hybrid roller guide system. Rapid traverse rates are 2,362 ipm (60 m/min.) on the X and Y axes and 2,205 ipm (56 m/min.) on the Z axis. The machine uses the company’s Mazatrol Matrix 2 CNC.
