The company’s radio transmission probes combine compact size with frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) radio transmission to bring the advantages of automated job setup and in-process measurement to a range of machine tools and applications. According to the company, the probes can reduce setup time, scrap and fixture costs while improving process control.
Various models are available, including the RLP40 and OLP40 probes for lathes and turning centers and the RMP40 probe for multi-axis and turn/mill machines. According to the company, radio transmission enables continuous communication between the probe and interface even when line of sight is lost, a particular concern with multi-axis and turn/mill machines.
Measuring 1.57" (40 mm) in diameter and 2.3" (58.3-mm) long, the probes provide unidirectional repeatability of 0.00004" (1 micron). The probes’ FHSS radio transmission pairs with the standard Radio Machine Interface (RMI) and uses the 2.4-GHz frequency band. The probe and its interface continually hop from one transmission channel to the other to deliver signal flexibility and robustness through frequency switching. This eliminates “dead spots” in the working environment and enables the system to avoid radio interference. Additionally, the probes are sealed to IPX8 to withstand harsh machining environments, while the RLP40 and OLP40 also feature an eyelid protection system to prevent entry of swarf and chips that could damage probe internals. “Transmission-only” modules are also available to enable the use of the company’s LP2 family of touch probes and accessories to reach part features that would otherwise be inaccessible.
