Makino has expanded its a81 line of horizontal machining centers (HMCs) with its next-generation a81nx model for large-part machining. The HMC features a 100-mm extension of the Y-axis column and an expanded tool magazine for longer, heavier tools. For improved speed and productivity, the machine is equipped with a 10,000-rpm spindle providing 305 Nm of duty-rated torque and 45 kW of extended-duty power (26 kW of continuous output). These enhancements effectively shorten spindle acceleration and deceleration times for faster tapping processes, the company says. An optional, 8,000-rpm, high-torque spindle is also available for machining hard metals. The bed, column and table castings are built for strength and rigidity, which is said to facilitate rapid acceleration. To ease operation, a height-adjustable automatic pallet change door and L-shaped access door provide operators with ergonomic access to fixtures and the spindle during setup and maintenance.
