The Marposs Mida visual tool setter (VTS) is designed to measure and verify small-diameter cutting tools with micron accuracy. The VTS measurement system helps to manage micro tools that can be incorrectly mounted in the toolholder or spindle due to small chips. Using a visual system that incorporates a CCD camera to capture images, the system calculates parameters such as tool tip position, tool diameter, tool runout and cutter radius with the tool at full rotational speed in the spindle. When the tool rotation is stopped or is run at slow speed, the VTS unit can be used as a standard microscope directly on the machine. The system offers 0.1-micron resolution, and is capable of measuring tools ranging from 10 microns to approximately 40 mm in diameter with a repeatability of 0.2 microns.
The VTS communicates with the machine tool CNC with a PC via Ethernet connection. Macros developed for use with the system keep the tool within the measurement area, acquire tool images, calculate geometry and automatically write data into the CNC tool table. The unit is equipped with a double-protection system that enables the device to function within the machine tool working area. The system is designed to filter any dirt remaining attached to the tool surface to reduce measurement errors.
