Aerospace Industry Application: Reverse Engineering

As product lifecycles increase in this industry through the deployment of life extension programs, there is often a call to define the baseline components both product and tooling alike. Often, it is not the same Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) performing these upgrades or the original drawings are not available. Further, the tooling and associated assemblies must be documented for their as-built configurations before work can commence. API understands and has solved this problem. Using a T3 tracking system, a user may dynamically map point locations and feature information converting it to digital data and eventually models.

Powerplant Industries Application: Steam Turbine Rebuilds

While rebuilding steam turbines it is common to replace components and use existing parts. This presents the challenge of matching new assemblies to the existing installation which has likely been in placefor many years. An API Tracker 3 or Omnitrak system can be an invaluable tool to aid in this process. The accurate very portable system can be used to map inlet locations on the outer cylinder. This information can then be used to check deviations from the original print and ultimately check any interference with the new inner cylinder prior to installation. This information can also be used to determine how much if any cutting or machining is necessary to match the existing outer cylinder to the new inner cylinder. Following any modifications the system can verify and document the changes to allow for accurate record keeping of the changes made. In addition to this specific example API equipment can be utilized anywhere new components will need to interface with existing parts to ensure a successful installation.
