API invented the laser tracking interferometer and holds the basic patent on tracker technology. In 1989 API licensed its tracker technology to Leica and aided in the development of the first commercial trackers. To date, hundreds of Leica Trackers utilizing API technology have been sold worldwide. API Tracker II™ second generation tracker's improves on the technology while reducing size and weight to increase portability with improved reliability and accuracy. Included are the company's high precision 2D and 3D digital scanning and probe systems, as well as an articulated CMM probing wrist. API's open architecture CMM controller provides a standard hardware and software sensor interface and uses a standard interface protocol which was jointly developed with NIST, Ford, GM and Pratt & Whitney. API's innovative patented, 5/6D Laser™ interferometer systems simultaneously measure linear straightness as well as pitch, yaw and roll. Use of the 5/6D systems reduces the time required for machine tool or CMM alignment down to 3 hours. API also produces advanced spindle dynamic and thermal analysis systems, and a complete thermal and geometric error mapping (Volumetric Error Compensation) system for real-time compensation of CMM or CNC machining systems. API also offers a unique rotary and tilt axis measurement and calibration system.

Automated Precision, Inc. (API), has relocated their headquarters and advanced manufacturing facilities to a newly-constructed two-story $4.6 million dollar, 45,000 square-foot building in Rockville, MD. The new API facility employs critical environmental HVAC controls, an enlarged precision machine shop, an extended 27 meter precision laser measurement rail for calibration, and secure T1 communications /data handling capability, which is necessary to support the production and distribution of its state-of-the-art-portable coordinate measurement and metrology product lines.
