Sending parts out for hot oxide finishing can be costly and bothersome, creating gaps in ISO and JIT programs. Today’s in-house blackening is convenient, fast and safe. In house cold blackening systems restore your control over part finishing and often pay for themselves in 3-9 months. There is no drain pollution or safety problems. Systems are available for all iron and non-stainless steels. Pre-engineered finishing systems supplied complete start with the BK-TT mini TruTemp or BK-1 Mini Presto® Black 5 gallon line for tool room scale or limited production scale blackening. The BC-20 tank system has large production line features without space and cost requirements. The 40 gallon BC-40 tank line utilizes eight heavy duty welded tanks. The 100 gallon BC-100 tank line utilizes 100 gallon heavy duty welded tanks.

In-House Blackening - The reasons for installing an in-house cold blackening system are many and varied. For most new users it means achieving better control of finishing quality, production scheduling, ISO compliance, not to mention the improved cost efficiencies.
Pre-Engineered Finishing Systems - Birchwood Casey is a leading developer of turnkey finishing systems and processes, including blackening and antiquing for today's modern machine shops,
In-House Blackening Process Designed for Aluminum Parts
The BK-LC Mini Lumiclad line from Birchwood Casey is designed to enable in-house blackening of small lots of aluminum parts.
Durable Clear Coating for Tools, Similar Components
Birchwood Casey’s Clearlok Max Topcoat is a water-based blend of acrylic polymers that forms a scuff-resistant, clear-coat finish on virtually all metal surfaces.
Free Black Oxide Treatment Feasibility Testing
Birchwood Casey (Eden Prairie, Minnesota) offers free lab testing of iron, steel or aluminum production parts to determine whether they are feasible candidates for its low-temperature black oxide processes.
Black Oxide Process Saves Time
Birchwood Casey’s Tru Temp blackening process can be completed in 6 to 10 minutes, compared to 20 to 40 minutes for common hot oxide.
In-House Black Oxide Process
The BC-40E Tru Temp black oxide system from Birchwood Casey is pre-engineered for quick setup and safe operation during in-house processes.
Going Lean Has Positive Benefits For Metal Finishing
The rationale behind lean manufacturing applies very directly to metal coating and finishing processes. The cost savings are often greater than one might expect.
Prototype-Scale Aluminum Blackening Line
Manufacturers that require same-day black finishing of small lots of aluminum parts can blacken parts in-house and achieve a durable, satin-black finish using the mini BK-LC line, according to manufacturer Birchwood Casey. The Lumiclad process utilizes a simple dip-tank procedure to form a durable, black-oxide coating on aluminum.
The Advantages Of Bringing Finishing In-House
You’ve made sure the parts were machined to spec. Now take the steps to protect those parts in the condition your customers expect them.
Blacken Aluminum In-House
Birchwood Casey’s Lumiclad black oxide process is a safe, in-house method for forming a durable black finish on virtually all aluminum alloys, the company says. Unlike black anodizing, which uses electrolytic chemicals to form the coating, the black oxide process uses a dip-tank procedure. According to the company, the non-dimensional (1.
Black Oxide Process Reduces Time And Labor Costs
Birchwood Casey’s automated Tru-Temp finishing system uses a two-stage oxidation process to form a black magnetite finish on all iron and non-stainless steel parts. The process is said to operate effectively at a temperature 100oF lower than other black oxide processes that require a temperature of 290oF. The result is a protective black finish that is 0.
Shop Saves Time, Money By Moving Part Finishing In-House
Through an internal study, this manufacturer found that outsourcing black oxide finishing for its motion control components led to high costs and increased setup times. With the automated CNC Tru Temp finishing system from Birchwood Casey, the shop moved finishing in-house, regained control over its costs and reduced setup and turnaround time.

Two Environmental Directives To Note
Not long ago, directives issued by governmental bodies outside the United States were often safely ignored by manufacturers in this country. Today, U.S. companies have to pay attention to laws and regulations coming from other countries because non-compliance may keep products made here out of key emerging markets.

Part Finishing And The New RoHS And ELV Directives
New environmental directives that have come out of Europe and Asia limit the toxic chemical content in manufactured products in order to protect users and to facilitate the recycling of these components. Restriction of Hazardous Substances legislation limits hazardous metals contained in electrical and electronic components. The ELV (End-of-Life Vehicle) Directive limits polluting metals that can be contained in vehicles in order to minimize hazards caused by recycling their components. In order to comply, manufacturers will have to consider finishing processes such as a low-temperature black-oxiding process that does not use banned substances or leave them in the finished product.
