Insert drilling of the Highest Caliber
KOMET® moves up a notch in the area of insert drilling with the KUB Pentron® . The new tool system offers continuous drilling up to 5 x D, also with performance data of the highest caliber.
KOMET has broken completely new ground to develop the new KUB Pentron®. It unites key features in one tool, such as attainable preci-sion, the highest performance parameters and impressive drilling depths. It permits up to 20% higher cut and feed rate values than in-sert drills currently on the market. The KUB Pentron® also provides high performance as seen in its length-to-diameter ratios of 5 x D. It masters extreme machining conditions that were previously only pos-sible in 3 x D.
The KUB Pentron® is equipped with two square inserts that have four effective cutting edges each. The internal and external inserts have exactly the same shape. From all-round geometry to soft cutting and what is known as chip breaker geometry, inserts with high perform-ance substrates and coatings are available for the widest variety of materials.
Just as the inserts and their respective geometries are patented, so is the basic body. There are three basic holder variants for 3 x D, 4 x D and 5 x D with parallel shank and ABS connection. A special surface treatment ensures optimum chip clearance and sliding properties. In the 14 to 44 millimeter diameter range, the new KUB Pentron® allows you to go up a notch so that insert drilling is possible across the entire range of length-to-diameter ratios right up to 5 x D.
KOMET of America
The KOMET Group is a global supplier of metal cutting tools, dedicated to the manufacturing of tooling systems that offer cost-effective metal removal on today’s high-performance machine tools. Our innovative, user-centric tool concepts have allowed us to be recognized as an international leader and to have a decisive influence on the technology of the future. Our brands: KOMET, JEL, and DIHART, are synonymous with excellence in the areas of drilling, thread machining, and reaming.
The KOMET Group® brings modern wireless networking to the new KOMET MicroKom®BluFlex™ precision adjustment system
By incorporating Bluetooth® wireless technology to the KOMETMicroKom® BluFlex™tool system, tool developers at KOMET®have isolated the display from the tool head, making it easier, safer and more convenient to read off the settings. When dialing-in the micro-adjustable head, the operator can affix the magnetic, external display unit anywhere within the field of view, outside of the machine tool. The illuminated screen and oversized numerals make reading easier, while the display can switch between mm and inches.
A specially-designed adjustment key, with integral Bluetooth® interface, is also part of the system. The same display unit and adjustment key can be used for multiple KOMETMicroKom®BluFlex™micro-adjustable heads, thus reducing costs when investing in several heads.
An improved integral part balancing system also allows the KOMETMicroKom®BluFlex™precision adjustment head to achieve rotational speeds up to 20,000 rpm, while the modular KOMET ABS® interface provides for easy adaptation to different machine spindles.
The KOMETMicroKom®BluFlex™also features an energy-saving function with an automatic shutoff after 30 seconds, and uses common AAA batteries.
The proprietary technology used for the JEL®MOREX R Roll Form Taps dramatically lowers tooling costs while enhancing tool performance.
With the new JEL® MOREX R series, the KOMET GROUP® introduces a unique tooling concept: HSSE Roll Form taps with replaceable carbide inserts. These tools expand the JEL®MOREX HML product range, which has already been used in thread cutting with great success. The JEL® MOREX R feature a flexible shank made of HSSE, which compensates for small alignment errors, while the carbide and hard forming edges offer maximum tool life. The result is a tool that far outperforms conventional carbide roll form taps, and that can be refurbished with new carbide inserts.
This translates into tooling costs reductions of 20 to 40 percent depending on the dimensions and applications. JEL®MOREX R Roll Form Taps are available as standards for metric ISO threads from M10 to M20, up to M36 upon request, and for metric fine ISO threads from M10x1 to M20x1.5 according to DIN 13. The JEL®MOREX R Form Taps are available with central internal coolant supply for machining blind hole threads, or with side coolant outlet for use with through threads and blind hole threads.
Borrowing technology from the tried and true KUB Quatron® solid drills, the new KOMET® Quatron hi.feed milling cutters represent high-performance solutions for fast removal of large quantities of cut material.
Capitalizing on the proven effectiveness of its KUB Quatron® drills, KOMET has launched a new range of milling cutters, the Quatron hi.feed. Ideally suited for roughing operations, where large volumes of chips must be removed, the Quatron hi.feed relies on KOMET’s four-effective Quatron indexable inserts to get the job done quickly.
The four cutting edges of the Quatron inserts not only maximize the tool life and lower the production cost per cutter; they also make the Quatron hi.feed a universal tool, capable of performing the most difficult milling operations. Using the Quatron hi.feed, machinists can mill deep grooves and large cavities by performing plunge milling, milling, circular interpolation, or inclined plunging operations. The Quatron inserts also have a radial cutting action, which translates to a considerably higher degree of flexibility in plunge and pocket milling when compared with two- or three-edged inserts.
Ideal when producing larger drilled holes using small or low-performance machines, the Quatron hi.feed, as the name implies, is also capable of high feed rates up to 2 mm per cutting edge. The proven BK8425 coating used for the inserts delivers exceptional tool life, while enabling universal use of these milling cutters for steel, cast iron and stainless materials.
Available in a wide range of diameters, the Quatron hi.feed is designed to provide flexibility and increase productivity in rough milling operations.

Last Glance at IMTS 2010
It would be impossible to cover all of the key exhibitors at IMTS 2010—even if every booth got merely a quick glance. However, the editors of MMS did get glimpses of some interesting technologies exhibited at the show...
High spindle speed is not needed for high productivity, particularly with the right choice of cutting tool types. Techniques described in this tutorial video relate to plunge roughing, high feed milling and slotting.
