Mori Seiki Announces Grand Opening of New 70,000 sq.ft. Mori Seiki to Celebrate 25th Anniversary at Innovation Days: Mori Seiki USA will be celebrating its 25th anniversary at Innovation Days 2008. This year’s Innovation Days event will take place at the company’s Chicago Technical Center on May 14 – 16. Mori Seiki University Announces 10,000 Hours of Training Provided: Mori Seiki has announced that Mori Seiki University provided over 10,000 hours of training in 2007. This milestone was reached thanks to the participation of over 1,000 students, with nearly 25% of those being customers of the machine tool manufacturer. The balance of Mori Seiki University’s students were divided among employees and distributors. Following a public dedication ceremony in May, Mori Seiki University has grown to offer a curriculum of 81 classes with a total of 983 classroom content hours. Customers can enroll to participate in classes offered at the division’s state-of-the-art facility in Chicago, Illinois or sign up to take courses via Education On Demand, an innovative and immersive online environment. “Mori Seiki University was established to keep the expertise of our employees, distributors and customers on par with today’s rapid rate of technological advance,” says Rod Jones, Chief Learning Officer at Mori Seiki. “We are thrilled with the industry’s enthusiasm, which has propelled us past this memorable milestone of providing 10,000 man-hours of training. Mori Seiki is planning to take over Sandvik Tobler SAS: Mori Seiki Co.Ltd, Nagoya, Japan and the company Sandvik has reached an agreement to take over the business of Sandvik Tobler SAS, France, which is a part of the Sandvik Tooling business area. Sandvik Tobler has operations in Louvres, France and produces precision mandrels and clamping solutions for the automotive industries. The unit has 80 employees and the sale amount in 2006 is around 8.5 M Euros. The transfer of the Sandvik Tobler unit to Mori Seiki is expected to take place in January 2008, subject to the obtaining of the appropriate approvals of the relevant antitrust authorities. In order to reply our European customer’s high technical requirement, the integration of Sandvik Tobler SAS into the Mori Seiki Group enable to increase our engineering performance in Europe to supply the customers as total supplier for machine tool and work holdings.
Dr. Mori is Elected a Fellow of the SME: The President of Mori Seiki Co., Ltd., Dr. Masahiko Mori, was recently elected a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), an international research institution for production technology based in Michigan in the United States. The inauguration ceremony took place on November 12 in Chicago. The SME is an international non-profit organization founded in Michigan in the U.S.A. in 1932, devoted to the development of production technology. It has about 70,000 members in 300 chapters worldwide. Its purpose is to provide support to enable its members to keep up to date with the latest specialized knowledge.In order to prove the advanced technical level of their members, they also hold qualification tests, and their CMfgE (Certified Manufacturing Engineer) and CMfgT (Certified Manufacturing Technologist) are recognized as extremely prestigious qualifications, especially overseas. Fellowship of the SME carries life membership of the Society, and is limited to 1% of the total number of members. The title is awarded to members who have contributed to the social, technological and educational aspects of the manufacturing engineering field through many years of dedication and service. Also, in 2001 Mori Seiki became the first Japanese company to receive the CASA/SME Industry LEAD Award. This award is given to enterprises who excel in advanced applied development and who conduct integrated manufacturing throughout their company. Mori Seiki Announces Expansion of American Headquarters: Mori Seiki has announced that it will be moving its U.S. headquarters to a larger facility in 2008. This expansion will accommodate the growth the company’s Chicago offices have experienced since becoming the company’s national headquarters in 2005. Mori Seiki is currently in the planning stages for the new facility, which will house offices for its national headquarters, the Chicago Technical Center, MTL (Machining Technology Laboratory), and MSU (Mori Seiki University). The building will be located in the NW suburbs of Chicago. “The expansion of Mori Seiki’s headquarters is a natural extension of the company’s continued success,” says Thomas R. Dillon, president of Mori Seiki USA. “Enhancing our headquarters’ presence in Chicago illustrates our commitment to the rapid growth of Mori Seiki University and to the increased support of the American market.” Additional details on Mori Seiki’s new headquarters will be released when ground is broken for construction of the new facility.
Mori Seiki Announces 24-Hour Spare Parts Guarantee: Mori Seiki announces a new 24-hour spare parts guarantee for customers in the United States and Canada. If a machine is inoperable due to part failure, Mori Seiki will ship a replacement part within 24 hours of receiving the order or the part is free. “To be globally competitive, manufacturers cannot afford to have a machine down,” says Thomas R. Dillon, president of Mori Seiki USA, Inc. “We set the absolute highest standards for supporting our customers and this guarantee represents our commitment to that goal.” The 24-hour shipment guarantee applies to the original purchaser of any Mori Seiki machine installed after January 1, 2008 and is valid for 10 years from the date of installation. The guarantee excludes machine castings, field-installed options, NC parts, special options parts and normal consumables.
Mori Seiki Announces Passing of Yukio Mori: Mori Seiki sadly announces the passing of Yukio Mori, former president of Mori Seiki. Mr. Mori passed away on November 19, 2007 at the age of 75. Mr. Mori leaves behind an impressive legacy, having joined the company in 1954 and served the manufacturing industry for over five decades. Mr. Mori’s son, Dr. Masahiko Mori, currently serves as the president of Mori Seiki. During his tenure at Mori Seiki, Mr. Mori was renowned for treating his employees with the utmost respect. At a ceremony in 1983, he stated, “Just as all living things will pass away eventually, so companies will also die. So what should we do to extend our life for as long as possible? We always keep this thought in mind while we are managing the company. Imagine that you are managers too, and start from what you can do. If you do that, then this unsinkable aircraft carrier will always remain unsinkable. If you don't, it will be destroyed from the inside, and will finally go down.” Even in the face of the extreme economic downturn, Mr. Mori embraced his employees and refused to allow any layoffs. In 2002, he explained, “We hold the management philosophy of ‘lifetime employment.’ However, this does not mean the seniority system. This is because people are our assets, to make the company grow. For this reason, we will not reduce our personnel, in spite of the current recession.” A company funeral and memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2007.
Mori Seiki Renovates DIXI Machines Production Facility: Mori Seiki has announced the completion of extensive renovations to the DIXI production facility in Le Locle, Switzerland. The updates to the DIXI facility have doubled its usable floor space, expanding it to over 160,000 sq. ft. The completed expansion has added a state-of-the-art training center to the DIXI facility. The additional capacity will accommodate production of some models of Mori Seiki machines. “As always, we are completely committed to maintaining an impeccable standard of excellence,” says Dr. Masahiko Mori, president of Mori Seiki. “This applies to all aspects of our business, including the relatively recent acquisition of DIXI Machines. Mori Seiki has announced the inclusion of a 20-station tool turret on two new models in its NL Series of CNC lathes. Available on the NL1500 and NL2000 machines, the 20-station turret allows the machining of more complex parts on the NL Series. Since the new 20-station turret can hold up to 20 tools, it is perfectly suited for jobs with a high number of processes that made them impossible to complete with just 12 tools. By using the high-rigidity, compact tooling system found in Mori Seiki’s NT Series and NZ Series, the company has increased the machining ability and versatility of the NL Series to match those of machining centers. Like all machines in the series, the new models of the NL1500 and NL2000 feature a milling motor inside the turret directly coupled to the milling tool. This patent-pending design drastically reduces the transmission losses and inherent vibration associated with competing designs, which use a series of gears and belts to provide a milling feature. When compared to conventional models, the direct-coupled milling motor reduces tool spindle acceleration time by 2/3 and diminishes vibration and noise by 1/2. To further reduce vibration while cutting, machines in the NL Series employ a rigid triangle structure in the bed, spindle and tailstock. The box way construction further reduces vibration and increases rigidity, resulting in greater cutting depth and feed rates, and reducing cycle times by up to 50%. The machines feature a digital tailstock in which a servo drive provides all movement. This allows position and thrust to be controlled from the operation screen rather than manually setting them. Additionally, by adjusting the tailstock from within the part program, setup time can be reduced by up to 50%. The NL1500 and NL2000 further increase accuracy by minimizing the effects of heat on machining operations. Specially placed coverings isolate heat radiating from the oil controller and hydraulic unit, redirecting heat to the outside of the machine. Heat transfer devices also control the heat emanating from the headstock and servomotors. The design of the turret with a direct-coupled milling motor also reduces heat generation to 1/15 of the conventional model.

The NMV5000 DCG™ combines the best of Mori Seiki’s unique innovations to provide an unparalleled 5-axis vertical machining center. The machine answers the growing demand that has come from the parts and die and mold industries as a result of the need for high added value and increasing complexity of part geometries. The NMV5000 DCG achieves superb accuracy by increasing machine rigidity with DCG technology and a Box-in-Box Construction. DCG minimizes vibration by pushing moving structural parts along their simulated centers of gravity. As a result, machining accuracy is improved, machining time is reduced and tool life is extended. Furthermore, the machine’s box-in-box construction achieves a structure with zero overhang, so that guideways and drives are well balanced, allowing stable feeds even at high speeds. To further improve the machine’s precision, the NMV5000 DCG implements DD (Direct Drive) motors on the B and C axes. By transmitting power directly, with no gears, backlash is eliminated. Additionally, with no parts to wear out, there is less maintenance and longer machine life. Turning is also possible, with a C-axis rapid traverse rate of 120 min-1 as standard and 500 min-1 and 1,200 min-1 available as options. Throughout the NMV5000 DCG’s design, Mori Seiki paid special attention to the machine’s ease of operation. To minimize setup times, access to the table was maximized. The door opening is 36.2” wide, with a distance of just 19.7” between the center of the table and the front of the machine. MAPPS III, the latest iteration of Mori Seiki’s standard setting control, maximizes the NMV5000 DCG’s user-friendliness. This new control offers improved hardware specifications, improved operability and shorter programming times. While the setup for 5-axis machines is often thought to be difficult, MAPPS III makes it a smooth and simple process through a real-time interference check function and high-speed canned cycles.

The full capabilities of a lathe and machining center are now available in one package Mori Seiki’s new NT Series of integrated mill turn centers fully combines a lathe with a machining center. In designing the series, Mori Seiki completely rethought the design and construction of multitasking machines to harness the turning ability of a lathe and the cutting ability of a machining center. The NT Series employs both DCG™ (Driven at the Center of Gravity) technology and the box-in-box construction of the NH Series horizontal machining centers, along with the turret with a built-in milling motor from the NL Series CNC lathes. The combination of these features is included with no compromises in terms of their performance. Machines in the NT Series contain a B-axis that uses a DD (Direct Drive) motor, eliminating backlash and making high-speed rotation possible. Indexing specifications for the axis cater to high precision machining requirements, allowing for input by units of 0.0001 degrees. To make the NT Series as efficient and productive as possible, special attention has been paid to machine speed. Maximum spindle speed is 5,000 rpm with a maximum tool spindle speed of 12,000 rpm. Additionally, the machines’ ATC (Automatic Tool Changer) features a tool-to-tool change time of just 1 sec. and a chip-to-chip time of only 3.4 sec. Special attention to thermal displacement allows machines in the NT Series to perform at the highest levels of accuracy and precision. The lower turret is located symmetrically in relation to the center of the spindle, forming a construction resistant to the effects of heat. Additionally, ball screw and motor jacket cooling have been implemented to completely eradicate inaccuracy caused by heat variations. The NT Series will make use of MAPPS III, the latest iteration of Mori Seiki’s highly successful control system. MAPPS III allows fast processing and is equipped with a collision prevention function that monitors machine movements in real time. The controls also take advantage of the ease and convenience of conversational input, providing high-speed canned cycles that lead to dramatic increases in programming speed. The NT Series will contain 9 models, with spindle, lower turret and no center support options bringing the total number of variations to 66. Varieties of the machines will be brought to market sequentially. Mori Seiki will host an Innovation Days event in early November at its Chicago Technical Center to formally introduce the new line to the North American market.
