Sumitomo
Sumitomo Electric Carbide, Inc. recently expanded the SMD replaceable carbide tip product line by adding an 8XD drill to their 3XD and 5XD lineup. The SMD nickel-plated body provides longer tool life than conventional replaceable tip drill bodies. A rigid serration coupling system affixes the replaceable carbide tips to the drill face, improving drill accuracy and repeatability.
Along with the drill body expansion, Sumitomo now offers three drill tip styles to improve the performance in a variety of materials. The SMDT-MTL drill tip excels in steel applications, while the SMDT-C has a chamfered edge to eliminate break out in cast iron applications. The SMDT-MEL machines super alloys, stainless steels and cast iron proficiently. All three tips are covered with a newly developed coating that enhances wear resistance and tool life.
The SMD is available in metric and inch diameters ranging from 0.4688" to 1.2008". Multiple drill tip sizes fit a single drill body to aid in the reduction of tooling inventory costs.

Sumitomo
Sumitomo’s new SumiEdge Mill is a uniquely engineered 88º tangential style milling cutter, designed for gray and ductile cast iron applications.
Featuring an innovative cutter and insert design, the SumiEdge Mill allows for the use of all 8 cutting edges. First, by rotating the LNMX insert within the pocket, the use of a total of 4 cutting edges is achieved. Four more indexes can then be added by switching the insert from one cutter to the next (using both left and right hand cutters).
The low cutting force and fine pitch design of the SumiEdge Mill allow for higher production machining and exceptional surface finishes.
New ACK200 and ACK300 grades provide stable cutting performance and a longer tool life. The ACK200 grade features Super FF coating with an ultra fine TiCN layer for anti-adhesion and wear resistance during general purpose machining of gray and ductile cast iron. The ACK300 grade uses a multi-layered Super ZX coating, consisting of nanometer thick TiAIN and AlCrN layers, coupled with fine-grained super tough substrate, for excellent fracture resistance.
The SumiEdge Mill is available in 3” – 6” diameters for both left and right milling cutters.
Sumitomo Electric Carbide, Inc.’s purpose and mission are to research metal cutting industry needs, and to design and produce innovative and highly advanced cutting tool products for the purpose of providing manufacturing solutions to the customer.

Boasting feed rates of up to 0.078” IPT, the new Metal Slash Mill from Sumitomo offers high productivity milling.
The unique design of this milling cutter directs cutting forces into the machine spindle to achieve high feed rates even in low rigidity conditions.
A four-corner insert (screw on assembly) design yields low tooling costs per part.
Sumitomo customers are already experiencing the benefits. “With the Sumitomo Slash Mill we realized incredible cycle time reductions by applying this high feed mill to our current manufacturing processes. Some of our cycle times were reduced by a matter of hours, actually seeing our long, complex parts made in half the time! With the unique design of this tool and it’s reliable, longer insert life, it’s a win-win for our shop. We can increase machine capacity without relying only on added operators or added hours, “ stated Brian Shoning, machining center groupleader, Vermeer Mfg. Co.
U.S. stock standard Metal Slash Mill bodies are available in 2.000” – 4.000” diameters.
The Metal Slash Mill is available with CS3000, a CVD coated grade for high-speed milling of carbon steels and stainless steels, the ACZ310 PVD coated grade for general purpose milling of die steels and cast irons, and the ACZ330 PVD coated grade for general purpose milling of steels and stainless steels.

Based on the concept of its successful WaveMill Series, Sumitomo’s new WEX indexable insert endmills and shoulder milling cutters are designed for the smooth cutting of a variety of materials.
The wave-shaped cutting edges of the WEX generate lower cutting forces, while the high shear cutting action ensures smooth and accurate performance. This is true, too, even during deep slotting or milling using low rigidity machines. Consisting of heat- and wear-resistant Nano technology coated grades, the WEX's high strength cutting edges substantially enhance feed rates, machining accuracy and surface finish.
WEX cutter bodies feature a highly durable surface treatment and an improved method of insert clamping into the pocket.
CVD and PVD insert grades are available to offer extended tool life in steel and cast iron applications.
The WEX comes in Super ZX coated ACP100, ACP200, ACP300 for steels and ACK100, ACK200 and ACK300 for cast irons.

sumiChamfer™ Systems are designed to improve cycle time. Featuring a unique collar that fits securely around solid carbide drills, these systems from Sumitomo allow for drilling and chamfering in a single operation, while eliminating secondary chamfering operations.
Two standard inserts are fitted in the sumiChamfer™ system. Slightly modified, these inserts use less than half the sleeves required by similar systems. The two inserts per unit are 180º apart for a balanced design. sumiChamfer™ inserts yield two indexes and are available with or without a chipbreaker. One insert grade, the ACZ310, machines all materials.
Sumitomo offers three sumiChamfer™ System models – the ER20, ER25 and ER32, with chamfer head sizes capable of drilling diameters from 4.00mm to 20.0mm. These systems operate at recommended drill parameters to full depth of hole.
Standard sumiChamfer™ DC-type collet chuck assemblies feature a ball bearing nose piece for greater accuracy. The system uses MDS coolant-fed drills and ER coolant collets.
The system of choice for a major farm equipment manufacturer, sumiChamfer™ systems can replace step drills in many applications.
