UNITED GRINDING Offers Two New Radius Internal Cylindrical Grinding Machines

United Grinding has added two new radius internal cylindrical grinding machines to its line of STUDER internal cylindrical grinding machines. The S121 and the S131 extend part production capabilities by offering more advanced technology and a new dressing concept.

With a workhead on a newly arranged simultaneously swiveling B-axis, the S121 and S131 radius grinding machines offer greater thermal stability, mechanical rigidity and interpolation from -60 degrees to +90 degrees. The machines are also equipped with a dressing spindle or a fixed dresser on the B-axis and a measuring probe on the grinding head.

 The new machines feature Granitan® machine beds which provide higher dampening levels, thermal stability and guidance accuracy. The StuderGuide® guideway and drive system with linear motors provide high wear resistance, a long working life and high dynamics. It also includes X and Z axes in a cross-slide arrangement as well as a cross slide, which in the case of the S121 can take one spindle, two spindles in parallel or two spindles on a hydraulic turret. In the S131 machine, the cross slide comes with a four-position turret with direct drive. The spindle on the radius grinding machine is arranged at the rear of the turret.

Both radius internal cylindrical grinding machines are powered by StuderSIM software that enables an operator to machine complex parts – often in a single clamping. StuderSIM derives workpieces from a drawing and completely defines and generates all necessary geometric data for the grinding cycles. Furthermore, operators can easily check and visualize the grinding process through simulation on a PC or on the machine.

With swing diameters of 9.84" and 11.8" above the table respectively, the S121 and S131 replace STUDER’s CT700 and CT900 models. The machines enable external diameters up to 6.3" to be machined with an external grinding wheel 9.8" in diameter. The maximum length of parts including clamping device is 11.8" for the radius grinding machines, and the maximum workpiece weight including clamping device is 220 lbs.

The new radius grinding machines are ideal for manufacturing dies, especially in the packaging industry, where tungsten carbide and ceramic are primarily processed, and the production of hydraulic components such as axial pump pistons, guide plates and housings made of hardened steel, cast iron and copper. The machines are also well suited for the production of complex workpieces with several tapers greater than 20 degrees to 90 degrees in a single clamping. Examples include watch and medical technology with extra-hard materials such as industrial ceramic, sapphire and tungsten carbide, as well as the manufacturer of human implants for shoulders, knees and hips from ceramic and titanium.

UNITED GRINDING Erosion Technology Sets New Surface Finish Standards

UNITED GRINDING recently launched Fine Pulse Technology that significantly boosts surface and cutting edge quality –  and therefore overall resulting tool performance reliability – in the production of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) metalworking tools. All UNITED GRINDING’s WALTER erosion machines, such as those in the HELITRONIC line, will offer the new technology.

Eroding systems with Fine Pulse Technology produce tools with smoother, more perfect exteriors and cutting edges along with super-fine finishes that match the level of visible shine generally reserved for polished tools. Such results eliminate re-grinding and polishing steps during cutting tool production to help increase output. Fine Pulse Technology finely finishes tools made from the most common PCD types with 10 µm grain size and from coarse-grained types as well.

UNITED GRINDING Installs 500th EWAG RS 15 Series Tool Grinding Machine

UNITED GRINDING reached a major milestone with the recent delivery of its 500th EWAG RS Series Tool Grinding Machine to tool manufacturer Mapal’s subsidiary in Mlada Boreslav in the Czech Republic.

Mapal started manufacturing PCD tools in 1980 and chose RS series manually operated tool grinding machines specifically to process ultra-hard PCD cutting material. The company – that now runs two shifts per day using 22 RS 15 and three RS 12 grinding machines – needed reliability and precision. The machines fulfill the company’s specifications of less than 2 µm over the long term as well as its need for flexibility to machine a variety of cutting edge geometries.

“Back then, the RS series of tool grinding machines from EWAG was the only one with the kinematics to assure these properties,” explained Christian Molch, managing director of Mapal’s PCD Competence Center in Pforzheim. “EWAG’s tool grinding machines have proven to be in a class of their own in terms of their stability, precision and flexibility.”

Options and add-on features make it possible to grind even the most complex geometries, such as convex and – in some cases (but not with PCD) – concave radii and cutting edges with axis angles, in the shortest amount of time. In addition, the latest version of the RS 15 tool grinding machine is quick and easy to set up and operate.

Mapal uses RS 15 tool grinding machines for a broad range of drilling and boring tools, milling tools, parting-off tools and indexable inserts made of PCD, in all variations – cutting left or right, with inner contours and axis angles. The machines are used for both producing new and reworking worn cutting edges.

“As we strive to fit our global sites with uniform production and operating equipment as part of our international production strategy, we grasped the opportunity of integrating the 500th R15 into the manufacturing process of our MAPAL subsidiary in Mlada Boreslav in the Czech Republic,” explained Molch, who acknowledged that alternative technologies – such as eroding or laser machining – have also become commonplace.

The process of grinding PCD tools is seen as essential by Mapal specialists, prompting Molch to expound on his positive experience with the manually operated tool grinding machines, “In light of their numerous benefits, we will continue to give preference to EWAG’s manual grinding machines when grinding PCD tools here in Germany, despite the high personnel cost.”
