Thread Milling Tool Reduces Premature Insert Failure
IMTS 2018: Tungaloy’s ThreadMilling ETLN series of indexable thread milling tools enables a single cutter body to use different thread profiles and pitches for various operations.
Tungaloy’s ThreadMilling ETLN series of indexable thread milling tools enables a single cutter body to use different thread profiles and pitches for various operations. The multiple-flute cutters incorporate inserts 25 mm (1") in length to improve machining efficiency.
The multiple-flute design is available for tools ranging from 17 mm in diameter (with two flutes) to 30 mm in diameter (with five flutes). Each tool diameter features two different types of neck sizes, except for the 30-mm tool, which features one. Thread profiles are available in ISO metric, with pitches ranging from 1.5 to 3 mm; unified threads, from 20 to 8 TPI; and Whitworth, from 14 to 11 TPI.
Double-sided inserts provide cost effectiveness. Loss-free screws for insert clamping reduce the need to remove screws from the cutter body to set the insert. An internal coolant system delivers coolant to the cutting edge and working surface during through-hole machining, which contributes to surface quality and reduces premature insert failure.
