Additive manufacturing (AM) will have an increased presence at the 2018 edition of The International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS), with more AM exhibits and content available to attendees than ever before.

Why? There are a few big reasons. First, 3D-printing technology is advancing rapidly and there are more options for process types, printing systems and materials than ever before. As more startups launch and more suppliers enter this space from other parts of manufacturing, there’s simply more ground to cover in terms of AM technology.

Second, and perhaps as a result of the first point, manufacturers are increasingly coming to rely on 3D printing for purposes beyond just rapid prototyping. Moldmakers are using metal 3D printers to make better, more efficient mold tooling as the result of being able to build conformal cooling channels inside an insert. Job shops are leveraging polymer 3D printers to build gages and workholding devices, in some cases even replacing metal parts. 3D printing even has its place in fabrication, where it can provide assembly jigs, fixtures and even press brake tooling. Finally, more businesses are beginning to look to additive as a means of producing end-use parts, especially those that require prohibitively small batch sizes, complex geometries or some level of customization.

Want to learn more? IMTS offers the perfect opportunity to explore 3D printing and the potential of additive manufacturing. Here’s where to find AM at the show:

  • The Additive Manufacturing Pavilion. Located on Level 3 of the West Building, the AM Pavilion features 56 exhibitors, up from 21 at the 2016 trade show. At its entrance is one of two Emerging Technology Centers (ETCs) at this year’s show, organized by AMT—The Association For Manufacturing Technology.
  • The show floor. Additive manufacturing technology will also be on display in other pavilions including the Metal Cutting Pavilion located in the South Building and the Controls & CAD-CAM Pavilion in the East Building. View a selection of AM products to be displayed throughout McCormick Place in the IMTS zone on Additive Manufacturing’s site, or search the exhibitor list by product category
  • Events. The Additive Manufacturing Conference returns to IMTS for 2018, happening September 11-12. With a program curated by the editors of Additive Manufacturing magazine, the conference focuses on industrial applications of 3D printing and AM technologies. View the program and register at additiveconference.com.

Other AM events include AppliedAM – Where Additive Minds Meet, presented by EOS North America on September 12, and technical sessions within the IMTS Conference.
