What do you think are the ideal machine tools with which to begin a job shop? Darrell Reid put thought into that question. He thinks the right capabilities and sizes are represented by two machines—a Haas VF-5 machining center and SL-30 CNC lathe. He says these two machines are compact enough to manage within a small shop, yet large enough to accommodate a wide range of potential work. He opened Reid Machine in Lake Elsinore, California once he had the financing to purchase these two specific pieces of equipment.

Since its founding, Reid Machine has transitioned from being just a job shop into a shop that also produces its own standard product. Read more about the shop’s transition here
