Cryogenic machining achieves dramatic tool life gains not by flooding the cut, but by refrigerating the tool.

In cryogenic machining, the liquid nitrogen passing through the tool becomes gas as soon as it exits the tool and touches the air. In this video, that cold gas is the white mist surrounding the tool. When liquid becomes gas in this way, the volume of the nitrogen increases by 700 times. The force of this expansion has a useful chip-clearing effect—enough to partially offset the fact that there is no coolant washing chips away. For more on cryogenic machining, click here.
