After concluding the first day of EASTEC 2011 at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Massachusetts, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) announced that a new event will take place next year and that EASTEC would not return until 2013. SME, the organization sponsoring EASTEC, is calling the new event Mfg4 in reference to the four industries that will be its focus—aerospace, defense, medical and energy. The new event will take place at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, May 8-10, 2012.

The four industries named are driving manufacturing growth in the Northeast, says Debbie Holton, SME director of events and industry strategy, who spoke before a gathering of current EASTEC exhibitors and guests. She added that these industries share technologies and processes, and have common manufacturability challenges.

Mfg4 will have a format that focuses on capabilities rather than solely on equipment, SME says. Exhibitors are encouraged to partner with other companies to show integrated solutions targeted to industry-specific needs. According to SME, exhibitors can apply for space at the event, but will be selected based on a “strategic balance of products and services that best match the needs of the audience.”

EASTEC will be back to the Eastern States Exposition, its traditional home, May 14-16, 2013. It will then alternate with Mfg4 from year to year.
