The most recent business forecast survey from the American Mold Builders Association (AMBA) found 68 percent of responding mold makers rating their business conditions as “good” or “excellent.” Encouraging as this number is, I found some of the more interesting contents of the study to be comments that respondents wrote in. One said, “Business is the strongest since Sept. 11, 2001, but payment terms are the worst in four decades.” Others commented on difficulties finding skilled employees. One said, “I just hired eight new guys, but they’re difficult to find. Many have left the trades and don’t look at the want ads anymore. I got one guy from an ad I put on Craig’s List.” According to the survey, the current average number of shop employees has declined since the last quarterly survey was done, while the average work-week length for shop employees has increased by one hour.
